Jouhikko by ~taika-kim. A bowed lyre of ancient Finnish origin, related to similar northern European instruments. The sound is produced not by stopping the strings against a fingerboard, but by the hand positioned from behind and through the hole at the top, stopping the strings with the backs of the knuckles. This jouhikko is a beautifully organic design, with natural imperfections of the wood for the sound holes and a simple length of pine for the bow.

Description

The jouhikko is a bowed lyre, related to welsh crwth and swedish talharpa, amongst others.

Body is oak, soundboard heat processed birch, bridge, the string extension piece and the neck reinforcement are ash, and the tuning pegs are beech.
Strings are horsehair. I used fir resin I collected myself for them.
The bow is just a nice piece of pine :)

Finish with iron oxide & linenseed oil, and after that a few layers with a mixture of tar, linseed oil and turpentine.

The white string is the melody string played free with fingers, the black ones are drones.

There's a few pieces that need refinement, like the badly designed string attachment in the extension piece. Now changing the tuning of any one string affects all the others too :/ So here I should have sticked more rigidly to historical examples.

The body shape is loosely based on several 19th century examples from the national Museum of Finland.
