Pine chest.

Hinges black burned steel shaped by careful hammering & chiseling.
Those curved folding parts are really tricky, threefold division was really the best I could manage, four was already too much, and I couldn't find enough support for shaping the parts most close to each other...

Finish umbra + linseedoil + tar (+turpentine). Umbra is an "earth colour", meaning it's basically just sand with a nice colour and small enough particle size. Tar is burnt from pinewood, so I think it goes great with the pine pieces :)

Oh, and I tried to use tools (knife + chisels) made by myself as much as possible. The only piece of machinework here is the bandsaw I used to cut some of the original planks.

The pelt is a vegetable tanned sheephide.

Model of the chest is based on a viking age burial, don't have the details here now... Anyway the chest is constructed so that it's supposed to hold the shape even without nails/glue.
I used normal wood glue + small wooden stakes to put it together, since the seams were not tight enough to hold with animal glue...

Working time around four weeks. But there was so many things I did for the first time... And I wasted a lot of time dabbling with the pieces in the beginning since I didn't have any blueprints except the excavation report :/

Very nice hand work my friend! It shows much skill and determination. It takes a certain kind of person to have the will to do what is needed for this kind of art! This box really has character and I think any Viking would appreciate the craftsmanship that has gone into it! Hail to the metalworker! :sun:

Great photo too!
thanks :) hmm though I think the decor is more inspired by 20th century art nouveau than nordic traditional designs.... but the construction, yeah, that's about as accurate as it gets!
Absolutely gorgeous!
